John Maher arrived in Port Phillip, district of NSW from Launceston, Van Diemans Land, with his father and brothers in the 1840s. Together, they were signatories to a petition from the citizens of Warrnambool requesting the New South Wales government to provide a policeman to the area.
John is listed in the Warrnambool Division of the 1856 Victorian electoral rolls.
He owned land in Panmure, then Garvoc. Several of his children are listed as potential pupils on the application for a primary school at Panmure in 1870. [1]
